ELMONT -

An out-of-control car struck four teenagers standing on a sidewalk in Elmont, according to police.

The incident occurred on the corner of Dutch Broadway and Elmont Road. Police say four vehicles were involved in the crash just after 3 p.m.

Nassau police say the injured teens are sophomores at Elmont Memorial Junior-Senior High School.

They say one of the vehicles slammed into a tree and a pole before striking the teens, who had just left school. The vehicle then flipped over.

Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says the victims are three females and one male. He said one of the females was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition and a second was taken by ambulance, also in critical condition.

Police say the other two teens have injuries that did not appear life-threatening.

There was no word on the condition of the driver. Details surrounding how the crash unfolded were not immediately clear.
