Islip Town officials are warning people not to put hazardous materials in their recycling bins after a truck caught on fire over the summer.

Officials say propane tanks, hypodermic needles, rechargeable batteries and even live ammunition have been found among the recycled materials – all of them with the potential to harm employees.

They say anyone hoping to get rid of hazardous materials should bring it to the recycling center in person, and not put it in a bin.

In Bay Shore this summer, officials say someone tried to throw out a container of gun powder. It exploded and a truck caught on fire.

The town of Islip says it will be stepping up its recycling education efforts with more information on what residents can and cannot send to the recycling center.
