Lawmakers are pushing to pass a new law focusing on disaster relief more than six years after Superstorm Sandy.

The act, called the Transparent Disaster Relief Act of 2018, is meant to ensure residents are better informed about the recovery process if another natural disaster strikes.

Rep. Kathleen Rice says after Superstorm Sandy, many residents took whatever disaster assistance was made available, not realizing it would be considered a duplicate payment.

As News 12 reported, the federal government demanded money that had already been spent to be given back, making the recovery process even harder.
