A vigil was held Monday evening in Merrick to remember the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting and to show solidarity with the Jewish community.
Joining in song and prayer, hundreds packed the sanctuary at the Merrick Jewish Center to honor the 11 people killed when a lone gunman opened fire inside Pittsburgh's Tree of Life Synagogue during a baby-naming ceremony. The victims were parents, grandparents, brothers, husbands and wives.
The leaders of four synagogues in Bellmore and Merrick organized the service to stand in solidarity to the people of Pittsburgh.
Religious leaders asked members of a Jewish youth group to light 11 candles in memory of the victims. People of all faiths were invited to attend.
Organizers say there hasn't been a gathering of this size in the synagogue since the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
The Pittsburgh synagogue shooting is now considered the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the U.S.
