Police confident in security for Suffolk Marathon

PATCHOGUE -

Police are confident in the security for this weekend’s Suffolk Marathon despite this week’s mail bomb scares.

Police say there is no credible threat to Suffolk County and that they’re always on the lookout for copycats.

“All these officers are going to be on alert for suspicious packages, suspicious activity,” says Police Chief Stuart Cameron. “So there's going to be a lot of overt security people are going to see."

Police say there will also be road closures for the race. Among the closures are Montauk Highway between South Ocean Avenue in Patchogue and Connetquot Avenue in Great River, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Exit 46A on Sunrise Highway will also be closed.

Marathon organizers say a shuttle bus will run from St. Joseph's for the runners.

"People are going to have their bags checked before they get on the bus,” says Sue Fitzpatrick, of the Greater Long Island Running Club. “So to make sure they're not bringing anything along with them that could be an issue for safety for the participants."

Runners can go to St. Joseph's to get their numbers until 8 p.m. Friday and then from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
