It took 150 first responders from 30 agencies to extinguish a fire that broke out Thursday morning at the old Sayonara Motel in Amityville.
Chopper 12 was on the scene over Broadway and Route 110 where thick black smoke and fierce flames were shooting out of the abandoned building.
Ten ladder trucks and 10 engines were on the scene for more than six hours.
Chief Aaron Collins, of the North Amityvile Fire Company, called it a “tough fight” due to the windy conditions.
Back in December 2014, a blaze erupted on the second floor of the Sayonara Motel, killing 56-year-old Kevin Furey. Several other people had to be rescued. The motel was shut down shortly after.
The town of Babylon says the motel owner put in an application with the Planning Department to renovate the building as another motel. Any hope at renovation has since been dashed since the building was completely destroyed in the blaze.
The Babylon fire marshal and Suffolk Arson Squad are investigating the cause of the fire.
