Sussex County town transforms with annual Halloween tradition

A Sussex County town really gets into the Halloween spirit with its annual scarecrow display.
Branchville residents create about 200 scarecrows that have real pumpkins as heads.
The characters range from biblical scenes like King Soloman’s choice and Daniel and the Lions, to movie scenes like ‘The Wizard of Oz’ or ‘Star Wars.’
The town even staged a scarecrow baseball game on one of the town’s fields.
The idea was brought to the town by residents Jeanne and Brad Heinke, who say that they saw some scarecrows in the town of Sandwich on Cape Cod.
“Kids love it and we love it and we’re exhausted,” says Jeanne. “It’s fun.”
“The idea took off,” Brad says. “The town embracing the idea in a way [we] never could have imagined.”
This is the third year of the tradition.
