Firefighters battled a four-alarm fire in Jersey City Sunday afternoon that left some families homeless.
They say the fire broke out around 1 p.m. in a building located on the 1000 block of Summit Avenue.
Fire officials say the flames were mainly found on the first and second floor in the rear of the building. They say the fire traveled up in the walls near the roof and cut across to several units within the row home building.
Officials say it took about an hour to get the fire under control due to difficulties with the heavy winds.
Jersey City Fire Chief Steven Mcgill says crews initially couldn't locate the fire, which is why it jumped to four alarms.
Authorities say most of the residents were able to evacuate. They say at least 15 family members were impacted, with some of their units sustaining minor water damage. Those residents will be able to return to their homes Sunday night.
As for the residents where the fire originated, their units have been deemed unlivable.
No injuries were reported.
The Red Cross is assisting with the replaced family.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
