A sea of pink swarmed Coney Island Sunday as Brooklyn residents took to the boardwalk for a great cause.

Hundreds of breast cancer survivors, their loved ones and supporters walked the boardwalk to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.

The American Cancer Society says the disease is the second leading cause of cancer death among women and is expected to result in an estimated 40,000 fatalities this year alone.

“It feels absolutely amazing to know that there are people who are supporting me,” said breast cancer survivor Rina Brooke. “And I'm supporting them and we're supporting one another because going through cancer is really difficult, going through chemo is really difficult.”

Organizers of the annual walk say the walk is an opportunity to remember lost loved ones and to celebrate the survivors. They say raising awareness is crucial because the key to successfully battling breast cancer is early detection.
