Police arrest alleged serial burglar in Nassau County

An alleged serial burglar was arrested following a burglary spree that went on for weeks.
Police say 53-year-old Donald Smith, of Valley Stream, went on a month-long burglary spree in the county.
News 12 is told he stole cash registers and cash from four businesses in Elmont, Lakeview and Valley Stream.
The first break-in allegedly happened on Sept. 14 and the most recent took place shortly before 3 a.m. Friday.
Video surveillance also showed the suspect breaking a glass door at County-Wide Beverage on East Merrick Road Tuesday morning.
“The lower half of our front door was broken in, the alarm was going off, the glass was on the floor,” said Ben Azizo, owner of County-Wide Beverage. “We didn’t open the door, we called the police immediately, they came and we could see from the outside the register was gone—taken right off the counter.”
He also allegedly stole a purse from a Valley Stream 7-Eleven parking lot.
Police say they used video surveillance and DNA evidence to make the arrest.
Smith is set to be arraigned on Sunday.
