A Hempstead man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2017 crash that killed a Salvadoran woman received four months in jail.
Christopher Ebron, 23, faced a judge Thursday to learn his fate for hitting and killing Ana Neuman, 58, nearly two years ago.
Ebron pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and driving while impaired.
Ebron's sentence was four months in jail, five years’ probation and a $3,000 fine.
Richard Mallow, of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, called the sentence a small victory because under the original plea deal, Ebron would have been sentenced to probation only.
Mallow wrote a letter to the judge, imploring him to sentence Ebron to the maximum of seven years. He said the larger sentence would send a strong message to "help stop the tragedies caused by drunk and drugged driving by holding offenders accountable."
Ebron was seen smoking what appeared to be marijuana cigars on Instagram over the summer as he awaited sentencing. In response, the judge added four months of jail time to his plea deal.
Ebron's attorney says in response to the sentence, "I believe today's sentence constitutes a fair and just resolution of this case."
