A business which provides rentable kitchen spaces for small businesses in Brooklyn has suddenly closed, forcing many of their customers out with little notice.
Sebastian Jarmillo owns Mi Casa Foods with his mother, and they say they were given only a two-hour notice of the closure.
"The girl from the company just very calmly said, 'You have two hours. Pack it and go' and I said 'how could you do that? It's our business,'" Jarmillo's mother says.
The company who owns the kitchens, Pilotworks, posted a message on their website announcing they had ceased operations on Oct. 13 because they had failed to raise the capital necessary to continue their operation.
“It is with a heavy heart that after failing to raise the necessary capital to continue operations, Pilotworks will cease operations on October 13th, 2018. We realize the shock of this news and the disruption it causes for the independent food community we were so honored to serve,” the message read.
Many business owners were left scrambling after the sudden closure, including those who say they already paid a full month’s rent. They say their products and foods are now spoiled.
Many of the business owners who relied on the kitchens to cook and prepare their food say they are now relying on friends and the community to continue their operations.
Pilot works website says they are responding to customer's questions about the sudden closure via this email address questions@pilotworks.com.
