Police say a man is dead following a shooting this afternoon in Hempstead.
Detectives say the 23-year-old male was shot multiple times at Dartmouth Street and Stewart Avenue. Neighbors tell News 12 Long Island that there is a day care at a home nearby.
The deadly shooting started as a fight, according to police.
"One of the males produced a handgun, shot several times, striking the other. As a result of those injuries, that male, he was 23 years old, passed away on that front lawn over here," says Nassau Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick.
Police say there were numerous witnesses and that while some have been cooperative, they hope more will come forward.
Investigators believe it was a targeted attack. The gunman remains on the loose.
The shooting comes days after a 14-year-old boy was shot in the pelvis on Franklin Avenue, but police say it's too early to tell if there's a link between the shootings.
Authorities ask that anyone with information on the shooting call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
