Authorities in Middlesex County say that they have arrested the driver accused of killing a New Brunswick vice principal during a street race.
The county prosecutor’s office says that 21-year-old Piscataway resident Freddy Garcia Jr. struck and killed 49-year-old Tyron Harrison while Harrison was walking near Stelton Road and Ethel Avenue in Piscataway on the evening of Oct. 6.
Officials say that Garcia lost control of his 2003 Honda Accord when he struck the victim. Police say that Garcia abandoned the car and ran away. They say that he falsely reported that his car, which was not registered or insured, was stolen.
Police say that Garcia and other drivers were involved in an illegal street race at the time of the crash.
Garcia faces several charges, including aggravated manslaughter. He was also issued 12 motor vehicle summons.
Harrison was the vice principal at New Brunswick High School. He was on his way to visit a relative at the time of the crash.
New Brunswick School Superintendent Dr. Aubrey Johnson said in statement, “As a school district, our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Harrison’s family. This obviously is a difficult time throughout New Brunswick Public School.”
The district arranged for grief counselors to be available to students, faculty and staff.
