Lamp post outage in Inwood leaves community in the dark

Some neighbors in Inwood say their street has been without working lamp posts for the past eight months.
They told News 12 that Pearsall Place is pitch dark during the evening hours, which creates a dangerous situation for commuters who use the roadway to get to the Inwood train station.
Neighbors also say the darkness encourages crime and drug-use.
The town of Hempstead says as many as 30 lights have been out in the community. They blamed Superstorm Sandy for the ongoing issues, saying that saltwater from the storm has corroded underground wiring.
In a statement sent to News 12, the town says it’s now bidding out the repairs needed to fix the lights.
According to the statement: "As a temporary stop-gap measure during this process, the town will be running their own overhead power lines to the affected residential street lights, which should be complete within the next two weeks."
The town of Hempstead has asked Nassau police to provide extra police patrols in the area while the lights are being repaired.
