HEMPSTEAD -

The winners of a new bicycle locker program were announced Tuesday.

The town of Hempstead installed 36 bike lockers at its Long Island Rail Road stations in Baldwin, Bellmore, Merrick, Oceanside, Wantagh and Woodmere.

Town Supervisor Laura Gillen says the lockers will be a great asset for the community and help the planet.

The winners will be leasing the lockers for a year and will have to pay a $40 locker deposit. That money will be given back when the locker key is returned.

A state grant helped pay for the lockers.
