More than 30 restaurants and bakeries showcased their best dishes at the Carltun in Eisenhower Park Monday night in honor of the Michael Magro foundation.

It started in 2004, when Terrie Magro's son Marc was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. A few months later, her older son Michael was diagnosed with leukemia at 14 years old. It was an aggressive form of cancer and Michael died within eight weeks of being diagnosed.

After having two children diagnosed with cancer, the Magro family went through a traumatic time in their lives. They say this is their way of giving back.

"So we decided that we were going to honor Michael and all the cancer survivors and start this organization in his name and in his honor," says Magro.

Michael's childhood friends still come to the event years later.

"Mike was my best friend, I mean I grew up with him. When he passed away, it was the hardest thing I had to go through in my life," says Nick Ferrara. "But them doing this, it's a way of bringing people together. It's really incredible."

After surviving Hodgkin's lymphoma, Michael's brother Marc wants to make sure other families don't have to go through what they went through.

"I lost my best friend," says Marc. "I know he's always with me. We keep the memory going."

All of the money raised Monday, which is close to $100,000, will go to help families directly by offsetting medical expenses and buying gift cards to help with transportation and parking at area hospitals.
