A Suffolk Little League team is urging the town of Islip to step in and fix their ballfields, which they say are plagued with problems.
The Central Islip Little League fields off of Eastview Drive were completed by a developer in 2013. The club leader says the fields are in serious disrepair already.
Just five years later, league officials say there are drainage issues that must be addressed. They also want the parking lot paved, and some lights put in for safety reasons.
News 12 spoke with league Vice President Leigh-Ann Barde Romain about the issues. She says they've been asking town officials for two years to help fix the problems. Those include fences with holes, an unpaved parking lot, fields with poor drainage and rotting bleachers.
"I want us to have a field you can find throughout Islip," says Romain. "We have travel ball, competition leagues. We go through Long Island and you see what everyone else has."
In a statement, Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said, “This administration inherited many challenges at the Central Islip fields from the developer. We are addressing all of these issues, including working with the town's engineering division to establish a long-term solution to remedy the flooding that exists."
News 12 did see crews out mowing the fields and emptying trash Monday. Last week, a broken front gate was repaired.
The Islip Town Supervisor also said they will be meeting with the community in the next few weeks to update them on the process.
Attempts by News 12 to reach the original developer Monday were unsuccessful.
