A Boy Scout has died and four other Scouts are injured after they were struck by an alleged drunk driver while hiking with their troop Sunday in Manorville.
The boy who died has been identified by police as Andrew McMorris, 12, of Wading River. He was a seventh-grader at Prodell Middle School in Shoreham.
The four injured Scouts range in age from 12 to 16 years old. Prosecutors say the four are recovering, although one is in very serious condition.
According to police, Thomas Murphy, 59, of Holbrook, was arrested and charged with DWI in connection to the incident.
Police say Murphy hit the Scouts of Troop 161 with his Mercedes. It happened just before 2 p.m. on David Terry Road in Manorville.
News 12 has been told that a total of 18 Boy Scouts and their leaders were on a pre-planned hike to the nearby Greenbelt trail when they were struck.
According to the criminal complaint, Murphy admitted that he had been drinking earlier at a golf club.
He was charged with DWI. News 12 is told Murphy was released Monday after posting $500,000 bond.
Murphy is due back in court next week. Officials say more charges could be filed in the case.
The Shoreham-Wading River School District says it activated its crisis response team and is offering support services to classmates and other members of the community.
