Actor Alan Cumming will be showing off his musical side with a concert this weekend at the State Theater New Jersey in New Brunswick.
The Scottish actor, known for his roles on such television shows as “The Good Wife” and “Instinct,” named the show “Legal Immigrant.” It is inspired by the 10th anniversary of Cumming becoming an American citizen.
“You can actually have a show that's like this, that has a theme that's topical and contentious, but you can also be hilarious and moving and whatever you like,” Cumming says.
Cumming says that the concert reflects on today’s political climate in terms of immigration.
"I talk…the providence of all the different composers of the songs I do. And the immigration status of the people who sing it; myself, the band,” Cumming says. “I keep the theme of immigration going all the way through because I want it to be a celebration of immigration."
Cumming has starred in two Broadway revivals of the musical "Cabaret," winning a Tony Award. But he says only more recently has he thought of himself as a singer.
“It took me a long time to just feel confident in my voice and confident to realize that I have something to bring to a song,” he says.
Cumming will perform “Legal Immigrant” Saturday at 8 p.m. More information can be found at the State Theater website.
