Lindenhurst officials say flood prevention continues to be top priority

Lindenhurst officials say flood prevention continues to be a top priority in the village.
For years, high tide and storm flooding have gone hand in hand on the streets of Lindenhurst, especially near the bay.
Whenever there was a big storm or an extra high tide, neighbors used to say the bay would overflow on South Fourth Street.
Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata admits there have been some delays but now they're seeing results.
On South Fourth Street, workers are raising the road surface 18 inches, bulkheads are being redesigned and check valves have been installed to prevent bay water from flowing up through storm drains.
Lavorata says the problem has been funding and getting the proper parts.
"Our focus has been try to do what we can where we can," he says.
Neighbors say the efforts are starting to work, but the village says there is more to be done.
"The last storm we had here the rain came up, it was over the curbs. It wasn't enough. No I don't think it was enough," says resident Tom Lombardo.
The village says it has been concentrating on fixing main roads that flood first. It will then move on to the secondary roads.
