As Florence continues to ravage the Carolinas, Long Islanders are doing their part to help in the recovery effort.

American Red Cross volunteers from Long Island are on the ground throughout the region assisting in shelters and ensuring that victims get the help they need.

News 12’s Averi Harper spoke with Red Cross Long Island CEO Neela Lockel, who is in Greenville, North Carolina – an area that's expected to see continued flooding over the next few days.

"The days are long, the work is hard, the conditions can be really, really rough and you have no idea - from one day to the next - what to expect and our volunteers do it all with a smile," says Lockel.

The Commack Fire Department is accepting donations for Florence victims. It is collecting non-perishable food, toiletries, paper products, and baby and pet necessities.

Fire officials say they have seen people from all over Long Island come to donate.
