Families gather to remember victims of 9/11 terrorist attacks
Mourners gathered Tuesday for the annual sunrise ceremony at Lido Beach to honor the victims of Sept. 11.
Days after the terror attacks in 2001, Long Islanders began to notice cars that had been left in train station parking lots, belonging to people who never made it home, in communities like Manhasset and Rockville Center. Nearly 500 Long Islanders were killed in the Sept. 11 attacks.
In the months after Sept. 11, thousands more Long Islanders sacrificed their time and their health in the rescue and recovery.
Through the fog and mist of a dreary September morning, people came together once again to salute them all, and to remember America's darkest day. This marked the second year of Point Lookout's new memorial ceremony on Lido Beach.
People placed carnations around the 30-foot steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. They also wrote notes to their loved ones lost, putting them in a memory box next to the hundreds of names etched in the memorial wall along the beach.
