Village officials look to install speed cameras

Posted: Updated:
GARDEN CITY -

Village of Garden City officials are pushing for the reinstallation of speed cameras in the area.

Mayor Brian Daughney says he wants approval from Albany to install five cameras throughout the village. He says the cameras are cheaper than hiring more police officers, and says the village tried speed warning signs, but they just don't seem to work.

Daughney says traffic has increased because of navigation apps routing more drivers into Garden City to avoid highway backups.

"We would have prior notice of where the cameras would be, we'll have large signs in the area where they are," Daughney says. "This is not about money, Garden City doesn't need the revenue."

Nassau County had installed speed cameras in school zones four years ago. The county made millions from them, but they were removed in the face of public outcry.

Nassau County officials tell News 12 they have no plans to install speed cameras.

The village says it’s asked state Sen. Kemp Hannon to support the camera proposal. News 12 contacted his office for a comment but did not receive a response.
