There has been an outpouring of support for a Northport High School student who was seriously injured after being hit by a car while heading to cross-country practice.
Miles Lerner, 14, was walking outside the high school when he was hit by a car and thrown 20 feet in the air on Laurel Hill Road.
The driver, Janet Aliperti, a cafeteria worker in the Northport School District, was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license and registration.
Miles suffered severe injuries all over his body, including head trauma.
"It was horrible. I never imagined that something like this could happen, especially to my brother who's so active and energetic and full of life," says Ayla Lerner. "He was going to start high school yesterday, but he can't now. And that just broke my heart."
Miles is fighting for his life in the pediatric intensive care unit at Stony Brook University Hospital.
Ayla, her parents and close family friends have been taking turns by his bedside since the incident.
His sister explained the feeling she felt while sitting next to her brother in the hospital.
"To see your best friend lying on a hospital bed in front of you covered in bandages, bloodied and not even be able to open his eyes and see you and he's on so much medication that he can't hear you say you're here and you love him," Ayla said.
A Fundrazr page started by Ayla has almost reached $67,000 in just a few days. She says the money will go toward his medical care.
"It's a long road ahead and we're not sure of the future, but we can just only remain hopeful at this point," she says.
