LGBT Network: More needs to be done for LI transgender students

Students at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School were informed about a gender-neutral, single-stall restroom located in the school’s nursing office with the goal of creating a safe environment for transgender students.

Principal James Murray says the restroom is for those “going through a transition or still not sure.”

“Some students go in there to change clothes for gym class because they don't feel comfortable in locker rooms identified for boys or girls,” says Murray.

Aaron Braun, who works for the LGBT Network, says he didn't have that option in school when he started identifying himself as a trans man.

“It’s those little things that I think most people take for granted…to think is it safe for me to go to the bathroom? Am I going to be ok?” says Braun.

While most schools on Long Island have a gender-neutral bathroom, members of the LGBT Network say more needs to be done to educate people in schools and provide clubs for transgender students.

Principal Murray says he's proud to say the Gay-Straight Alliance Club, or GSA, at his high school is well respected. Club president Sierra Miles says they have about 35 members and look forward to supporting all students this school year.

“I think it’s really important that we can have a place to help people find themselves,” says Miles.
