Long Islanders flocked to the beach Monday to mark the unofficial end of summer, and some crowds at Jones Beach got a special show from some unexpected visitors.
The sun and the heat brought between nearly 100,000 people to Jones Beach for Labor Day. And while people played in the sand, a few whales were playing just off the shore.https://twitter.com/LaMonicaMark/status/1036640593638764545
The three whales were spotted breaching the water nearly 1,000 yards off the shore.
In addition to whales, officials say there has been an unusually high number of marine life in the water off Jones Beach, including dolphins, stingrays and a spate of sharks earlier this summer.
Park officials say Monday was one of the busiest Labor Days at Jones Beach in years.
