An 11-year-old child who was left in a hot SUV after returning home from running errands with her family died Tuesday afternoon.

Suffolk County police say young girl's mother called 911 shortly before 4 p.m. It happened in the driveway of a home on Kathleen Crescent in Coram.

"The call was for a young child left in a car whose lips were turning blue," says Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer. "The mother brought the child into the house and was instructed to do CPR."

The child was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, but she didn't make it. Police say the girl, who's yet to be identified, was left in a Ford Expedition with all of the windows rolled up. Temperatures were in the 90s on Tuesday.

Police say it's unclear how long the girl was inside the SUV.
