There is a new push to clean up some of the waterways in Yaphank.
Brookhaven Town officials began draining Lower Yaphank Lake on Monday in part of a $2.5 million project to remove sediment and take out invasive plant species in the lakes around Yaphank.
"The goal here is to not only clean out the lake, bring the fish back, but also educate the people in the community and the surrounding communities that you can't empty fish tanks here," says Councilman Michael Loguercio. "You must clean off your boats before you bring your boats back into this area."
Canaan Lake in North Patchogue was drained earlier in the summer and Upper Yaphank Lake was drained in 2013.
