Prominent Asbury Park man struck, killed by train
A community is in mourning after a well-known and well-liked Asbury Park man was struck and killed by a train.
Brian Holland, 37, was struck and killed by a New Jersey Transit train on Sunset Avenue around 2:20 a.m. Monday.
Friends said that Holland, who was an executive at The Asbury, often donated his time to help local organizations, including Garden State Equality.
“Brian was one of the most likeable people, I think in Asbury Park and quite possibly New Jersey,” says Garden State Equality executive director Christian Fuscarino.
Friends say that Holland was at the Asbury Park bar Georgie’s for a charity event and left shortly after 1 a.m. Monday. They say that he was in great spirits that night.
“Dancing, singing to the jukebox at Georgie’s. Just having a great time,” says Eric Pinckney.
A spokesperson for NJ Transit says that the train that struck Holland had no passengers on board at the time and was moving cars for the Tuesday morning commute. Holland was just one block away from the bar and a few blocks away from his home when he was killed.
Holland’s friends say that they want answers about what led to his death.
“I just want to make sure that they get down to the bottom of it and find out exactly what happened to him because it’s just such a horrible thing,” says Jeanie Pepe.
A wake for Holland will be held Wednesday, followed by a funeral Thursday.
NJ Transit police are investigating the incident.
