Police say they have arrested a man who was carrying an AR-style rifle in Baldwin Sunday afternoon.

They say the man was carrying the rifle by the Milburn Creek Park.

News 12 was told by Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy that the man was suicidal.

The standoff lasted longer than an hour as police tried to get the man to surrender his weapon and turn himself in.

Mayor Kennedy says the armed man finally agreed to turn himself in after he requested a particular Freeport officer to respond to the scene.

That officer, who was off duty at the time, responded to the scene and the man was taken into custody.

The incident led to road closures on Atlantic Avenue. The road has since been reopened.
