EAST ATLANTIC BEACH -

East Atlantic Beach has closed to the public after officials say hypodermic needles and other medical waste washed ashore.

The Town of Hempstead says crews have begun combing the beach for more waste. Town Supervisor Laura Gillen called it "a huge volume of syringes, medical and bathroom waste."

The beach will be closed in the meantime.

Gillen says the town is also working to determine if the issue impacts Atlantic Beach Estates or the village of Atlantic Beach.
