Police are investigating after a 2-year-old boy drowned in a backyard pool in Bridgeport Thursday night.
Police were called to the house on Charron Street around 7:30 p.m.
Authorities say that people at the pool party thought the boy was being watched, but then noticed he was missing. That's when he was found floating face-up in the water, according to police.
They say EMTs performed CPR on the boy at the scene.
He was then rushed to the hospital where officials say he later died.
Police say that the boy had been in the above-ground pool in the past, but with a flotation device.
"Some of the parents assumed that he was upstairs with the mom, because he lived here," says Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez. "Others thought he was downstairs somewhere. Eventually, the child was located floating in the water."
Perez says his thoughts and prayers go out to the child's family, calling this an excruciating tragedy.
The investigation is ongoing.
City Council member Mary McBride-Lee says she was at Saint Vincent's Medical Center Thursday night with the family, and says their grief was uncontainable.
On Friday, Bridgeport minister Simon Castillo stopped by the house on Charron Street to deliver condolences to the family.
