President Donald Trump has weighed in on the race for Connecticut's next governor.
"It is about time that Connecticut had a real and talented Governor. Bob Stefanowski is the person needed to do the job," the president tweeted in part Wednesday morning after Bob Stefanowski's upset win over Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton and three other GOP candidates.
Just moments after Trump's endorsement, Democratic candidate Ned Lamont called his opponent "Bob Trumpanowski." The Republican shot back, calling Lamont "Ned Malloy," trying to tie him to deeply unpopular Gov. Dannel Malloy.
Stefanowski stunned political observers Tuesday night by beating back four Republican challengers, including Boughton, who had received the party's endorsement.
Stefanowski says he's proud to run on Trump's tax-cutting record in spite of some controversy surrounding the president.
For the Democrats, Lamont defeated Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim by a wide margin.
Political analyst Dr. Chris Haynes, of the University of New Haven, says people can expect the governor's race to get ugly and expensive. He says Stefanowski will stay "laser-focused" on Connecticut's sagging economy, while Lamont's strategy is to make the race about Trump.
In the Tuesday primaries, more Democrats voted but Republicans saw an even bigger surge. Experts speculate that it might be due to the unpopularity of Malloy, who's a Democrat.
