New Jersey health officials have confirmed the state's first human case of the West Nile virus.

According to officials, a 74-year-old Hunterdon County man recently tested positive for the illness after displaying symptoms late last month.

His name and further details on his condition haven't been disclosed.

Officials say two other potential West Nile cases remain under investigation.

The news comes amid a mosquito season that's already outpacing last year's season in New Jersey.

Between July 8 and July 28, officials say a record number of 195 mosquito pools, a collection of trapped mosquitoes, tested positive for West Nile in New Jersey, which is double the amount during the same time last year.

It's also higher than the five-year average of West Nile during the same period.
