New art exhibits are flourishing at local parks, thanks to a cultural programming initiative.

One exhibit was created by artist Cara Lynch in Virginia Park in Parkchester.

“I'm so happy you're here” features stenciled patterns referencing traditional parquet flooring. The flooring is typically found in rich homes as a symbol of status and importance. At Virginia Park, however, it is seen as a welcoming and inviting mural for visitors.

Lynch’s piece was selected by a board of community members and artists to become one of the latest public artworks to grace New York City through the UNIQLO Park Expressions grant.

UNIQLO is a clothing company that partnered with the Parks Department to brighten up 10 locations across the city.

The $200,000 grant brings art exhibits to parks that have historically lacked cultural programming.

“When I see this mural I think of different colors, different sizes, different textures,” says community member Isaias Vega. “And really, that's all the Bronx is.”

The new installation will be at Virginia Park through the fall of 2019.
