A Hauppauge firefighter is being called a hero after saving an unconscious pregnant woman.
Volunteer firefighter Larry Kunzig was spending time with his grandchildren at his Hauppauge home Monday night, when his wife, Grace, saw a woman fall out of a car onto their front lawn. She was unconscious and not breathing.
Kunzig told News 12 that he ran outside and started checking her vitals.
“We started CPR right away,” he says.
Kunzig says the 47-year-old Karen Ciliotta was unconscious and seven months pregnant. His wife called 911.
"It was very scary…I wanted this mother so badly to have her child," says Grace Kunzig.
The woman was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center where doctors performed an emergency cesarean section.
The Kunzigs are happy to report Ciliotta and her newborn baby are doing well. It was not immediately clear what caused her to pass out. She is still recovering in Stony Brook.
