RONKONKOMA -

A quick-thinking witness to a crash in Ronkonkoma may be able to help police catch a hit-and-run suspect.

The Tuesday morning crash on the Long Island Expressway’s South Service Road was caught on a home surveillance camera in the area. It shows a white Chevy Suburban switching lanes and slamming into a white Scion. The Chevy then turns on Pine Avenue without stopping.

Brian Ryner was driving that Scion. He told News 12 that he was on his way home from picking up breakfast when that truck came out of nowhere.

"I was left with broken pieces of my car and there was nobody there to help me at that moment,” said Ryner.

However, another driver – Joe DiMartino – had witnessed the incident and decided to take action. He was able to track down the truck a few blocks down the road.

"He was driving with a flat tire, and his wheel and axel was all smoking,” said DiMartino.

He then snapped a few pictures of the Chevy, took down its license plate and headed back to the crash scene to pass the information off to Ryner.

"He is amazing. He is a very good person," Ryner said of DiMartino.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
