Officials celebrated the decision to add Mitchel Field to the National Register of Historic Places Monday.

The historic Long Island flight pad was used to train hundreds of aviators during World War I.

Once covering more than 1,000 acres of land, only its core 108 acres remain today.

The area includes Mitchel Athletic Complex, Cradle of Aviation Museum, Nassau Community College and Hofstra University.
