Kids in need get free supplies to get ready for school year

Kids in need were receiving free backpacks, clothes and other school supplies at an event Sunday in Valley Stream.
The event at Ogden Avenue Elementary School was organized by the National Council of Jewish Women. Some 250 volunteers were helping 800 kids go back-to-school shopping there to prepare for a successful year of learning.
The students were receiving everything from pens and pencils to sneakers and jackets. The items came at no cost to their parents -- they were donated by charities and individuals.
The council also held an event Friday that provided school supplies to dozens of students with disabilities.
