Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has approved $9 million to fund the Rails to Trails project.
However, some people in Rocky Point say they're against what will become a 10-mile recreational trail near their homes. Neighbors on Prince Road say the project should bypass their area for safety reasons. In fact, it was hard to find anyone in the area who supported the project. Many said they were concerned about the trail becoming a crime magnet.
Residents also cite privacy concerns, saying a section of the trail will run long power lines right behind their homes.
Construction is slated to start next spring and should be completed by 2020.
