Street sign makeover poses a $64,000 question in Bellport
A nonprofit group is hoping to add some charm to the village of Bellport with some quaint new street signs, but price-conscious residents fear the initiative is misguided.
The Bellport Village Program Fund hopes to replace the traditional green street signs with a “white post” style of marker.
"We thought it'd be a very cool thing to do, add to the ambiance of the village,” says Mike Foster of the Bellport Village Program Fund.  “And we think if we can get it done, it would be very positive for the village."
Four of the new types of signs, each made of a different material for testing purposes, have been placed throughout the village. Each new post costs $800.  That cost, multiplied by 80 for the number of signs that would have to be replaced, brings the total cost up to $64,000.
Even though Foster says the Bellport Village Program Fund would pay for some of the signs, the village would need to pay for the rest. Some residents say the price is just too much to swallow.
“I don't think it's worth the money," says resident Kathy Butler.
Money isn’t the only issue residents have raised with the signs. Some say they are also difficult to read.
As the debate continues, the Bellport Village Program Fund says the village still needs to give its stamp of approval on the signs.
