The Nassau SPCA says a male and female coyote have been spotted over the past few weeks in Searingtown, a community in the Village of Roslyn.
Gary Rogers, of the Nassau SPCA, says anyone that comes into contact with the animals should not corner them. He also says residents should not leave any food sources outside their homes.
One man who asked not to be identified told News 12 that the coyotes have already started to prey on feral cats in the area.
“A couple of weeks ago, [I] saw one of them with a cat in its mouth,” said the man.
Frank Vincenti, the founder of the Wild Dog Foundation, told News 12 his theory as to how the coyotes came to Long Island.
“It could be they're swimming very narrow water courses, or they're actually coming over some industrial rail lines,” he said.
Authorities are urging anyone who comes into contact or sees the coyotes to call police.
