The Long Island Rail Road is on or close to schedule Tuesday after there were cancellations Monday due to the derailment of a non-passenger train over the weekend.
Seven Monday evening trains on the Babylon, Long Beach, Port Jefferson and Port Washington branches from Penn Station were canceled. Eight more had been canceled for the Monday morning commute.
Tracks were damaged when a non-passenger train derailed at the West Side Yard. It happened Saturday but wasn't announced until Sunday.
Some commuters said they took earlier trains to avoid any issues, but others said they had no choice but to deal with delays and cancellations.
LIRR President Philip Eng says he notified the MTA Board around 1 p.m. Sunday that the derailment would affect commuters Monday. Information about the cancellations first appeared on the LIRR's Twitter page around 5:20 p.m. Sunday, and the media wasn't notified until a little after 8 p.m. Eng says he was waiting to get more precise information.
"The last thing I wanted to do is not give out accurate information," he says.
The LIRR is looking into the cause of the derailment as it continues to make repairs.
