Cats rescued from Garden City home head to Maryland sanctuary

WANTAGH -

Officials say 15 cats rescued from a Garden City hoarder will be heading to a new home Friday.

The felines will be sent to a cat sanctuary in Maryland.

The Nassau District Attorney's Animal Crime Unit executed a search warrant at the home in Garden City earlier this month. Officials called the home a "cat hoarding house."

Investigators say they found 25 to 30 cats living in deplorable conditions inside the home. They say crews were forced to were hazmat suits while rescuing the animals.

Police say the homeowner was arrested on animal cruelty charges.

"This was a pretty bad house," says Nassau SPCA Detective Gary Rogers. "When our investigators were inside in their hazmat suits, the alarms went off for the ammonia levels and the house had to be ventilated."

Rogers says it was the first time some of the cats rescued were getting a breath of fresh air.

The Nassau District Attorney's Office has donated more than $5,200 in forfeiture funds to pay for the care of the cats.

Officials say some of the cats were also able to get adopted.
