Friends of a 9-year-old Bedford boy have started a GoFundMe page in an effort to help him recover from a stroke.
Rocky Serrano suffered a severe stroke caused by a rare congenital condition called arteriovenous malformation. On July 1, Serrano went from being an active young boy to fighting to recover at Blythedale Children's Hospital.
The fourth-grader has lost mobility on his left side and the ability to walk for now. Serrano's parents work as school bus drivers and are now facing months of mounting medical bills.
To help ease the Serrano's burden, friends have set up a GoFundMe page that's raised more than $25,000.
"Thank you, thank you for all the love and support that we really feel," says Rocky Serrano Sr. "It's really amazing and I know because everybody that knows my son, they love him."
Doctors say Serrano's life has changed forever, but they need to see how things progress with therapy.
Serrano still needs two brain surgeries, which are scheduled for next month.
He says one of the first things he wants to do when he's better is go to see a Mets game.
