The basketball courts at Nuzzi Park in New Hyde Park were recently replaced after some neighbors said they caused too much of a disturbance in the community.
It has been converted into a smaller, hybrid volleyball and tennis court.
Neighbors told News 12 that basketball courts attracted non-village residents and was the site of fighting and cursing. They say they had to call police on some occasions.
Last summer, village officials tried to enforce a residents-only policy at the park, but they later decided to do away with the basketball courts altogether.
Some neighbors said they have been happy with the switch and that the park is much quieter.
However, Tyler Jones of New Hyde Park, said he used to play ball at the park every day. He says the village should have enforced the residents-only rules.
News 12 reached out to Mayor Lawrence J. Montreuil, who said the switch was made because the park is geared toward younger kids and the smaller court is a better fit.
Anyone that is looking for a basketball court in New Hyde Park can head to Memorial Park, which is nearly 1 ½ miles from Nuzzi Park.
