Doctors issue UV ray reminder, urge sunglass usage

NORWALK -

With skies clear and the sun out this week, doctors are urging families to take care of their eyes with sunglasses that fully block damaging UV rays.

Dr. Martin Arkin says everyone should wear sunglasses labeled 100 percent UV protection or UV400, which means they block both UV-A and UV-B rays.

According to the World Health Organization, as much as 80 percent of a person's lifetime UV ray exposure happens before the age of 18. And damage can come from cumulative exposure over time, leading to problems much later in life like macular degeneration and cataracts.

Arkin recommends large lenses that wrap around the face. And sunglasses are important for adults too.

UV damage can occur all year long -- not just on sunny days in the summer.
