LIer seeks funds to get Haitian lacrosse team to championships

ELMONT -

Lacrosse players from Haiti, including a team member from Long Island, could get their first chance to compete in the world championships -- if they can raise enough money.

Stevens Cadet, of Elmont, is raising funds for his team to pay for room, board and traveling to the World Lacrosse Championships in Israel on July 12.

Cadet, who was born in the United States but whose family is from Haiti, was selected to play for Haiti’s lacrosse team.  He will be the only person from Long Island on the team.

“The support is definitely needed because if we don't get the funds somehow, someway, these are 23 adults who are missing the opportunity to represent Haiti on the world stage,” he says.

Cadet says the trip is probably the single most important thing in his life right now.

“I wake up, I go to sleep and I'm always thinking of new ways to help fundraise,” he says.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the team.
