Crowds packed Jones Beach for the Fourth of July despite overcast skies being present for most of the day.
Many beachgoers said they went out early to get a good spot for the annual fireworks show. Thousands of fireworks burst in the air above the beach for the show.
The boardwalk was bustling with people showing off their patriotism, donning red, white and blue in honor of America's birthday.
State park officials estimated there were about 141,000 people on the sand.
Jones Beach did not reach capacity, but Sunken Meadow State Park, Wildwood State Park and Orient Beach State Park were closed to incoming vehicles after filling to capacity.
Lifeguards at Jones Beach extended their on-duty hours to allow swimmers to wade in the water until it got dark.
